Photo by @jimrichardsonng Atop the high hill in the Isle of Muck I had a grand view of Scotland’s Small Isles, Muck beneath my feet, Eigg hulking in the distance. And I was getting a lesson in history and the odd appeal of rugged island life from Muck’s owner. Looking at Lawrence MacEwan on top of his island, being blown by a gale, you might think he’s as wild as his horses. In truth he is a lovely, gentle man, devoted to his island. If you were to have a laird then Lawrence is the laird you want. (Unlike nearby Eigg in the background that suffered under atrocious ownership until the disgusted islanders bought the island for themselves.) For me Muck will always be a place of goodness. The Sound of Life Photo by @babaktafreshi The World at Night project A couple of nights ago in the Sierra mountains near Mammoth Lakes, California. The smog from the forest fires reduced the sky contrast but still the view was fantastic. The bright star at top is Altair, one of the three stars of the Summer Triangle. On the technical side of this 20-sec exposure, some of the followers often ask if some of my nightscape images are composites or edited? I do mainly single-exposure classic photography for the past two decades, no digital blending of separate foreground and sky. Elements of the sky are a part of nature and I respect them the same way, not relocating or adding them where they do not exist. Every single star in these photos is real and the view often resembles what the unaided eye sees, when fully dark adapted, though the camera reveals more colors at dark. Photo by @chrisburkard . Fly-fishing Kamchatka. It may appear elegant and simple in photographs and films but really it’s quite the challenge. The technical finesse can be taught and practiced like anything else. But the real challenge comes in knowing a river, its seasonal ebb and flow, and the life force that flows with it. The best fishermen i’ve met seemingly become part of their local river, mirroring its slow, graceful meander in their movements. That’s the beauty I see in fly-fishing.

Photo by @dguttenfelder (David Guttenfelder) // #sponsored by @statefarm // Words by @megkstack76 (Megan K. Stack) // We spotted a vanity plate in an Arizona gift shop and burst out laughing: “Where the hell is Route 66?” After nearly a month on the road, this is our most frequently asked question. As a fixed line through the landscape, today’s Mother Road is fragmentary and elusive, splitting and turning to rutted dirt and disappearing under roaring interstates. And so we’ve come to embrace Route 66 as a more general geography and a freewheeling state of mind: Wide open and waiting for anybody with a full tank and a willingness to get lost riding the back roads all the way to the ocean. We like to ride with the windows down and the music up. We pull over for spots that are strange and desolate: The abandoned, wind-swept gas station tagged into a kaleidoscope of color and reborn as a skate park. The haunting moonscapes of the Petrified Forest. The eerily immaculate recreation of a 1960s camper park at the Enchanted Trails RV Park outside Albuquerque. We are riding Route 66 into some of the weirdest and wildest corners of the American imagination. // Route 66 is the most celebrated stretch of highway in America. However, with more travelers opting for the interstate, it needs your help. Join @savingplaces and @statefarm on our 2,400-mile journey across America’s most iconic roadway at natgeo.com/route-66.
