“I attended a public school that promoted inclusion. I have been an active member of school and in my community throughout my life. I worked with a job coach. I have been influenced by these experiences. Inclusion shapes lives. It creates opportunities and promotes a unified generation. Inclusion benefits everyone even those with no disability...We must create inclusive policies. People with disabilities need to be included and valued.” -Jared Niemeyer, Special Olympics Missouri Board Director & Athlete Leader. @unitednations #InclusionRevolution

specialolympics

“This is who we are in life. We need to be valued. We have feelings and emotions. What is the difference between us and all of the other people in the world? I don’t see a difference. Instead of labels & discrimination, think happiness & inclusion. Let’s be inclusive. That’s all we need in this world. Inclusion, inclusion, inclusion!!!” -Chaica Al Qassimi, Special Olympics United Arab Emirates Athlete Leader while addressing the @unitednations. #InclusionRevolution

“My role as a Global Youth Ambassador is important to me because it gives me the voice to advocate for myself and for my friends. Everyone in this world is made to matter. I hope to achieve my goal of becoming a public speaker so that I can share my story in hopes of helping others. Just like Loretta Claiborne inspired me, I hope to inspire others...My advice to others is STOP putting labels on us! We aren’t a price tag. We are humans and want to be treated like humans. Everyone wants to have a purpose.” -Tajha Ilerant, @sonorthamerica Global Youth Leader on her role & advice to others. @unitednations #InclusionRevolution

“In Brazil we have a law that requires that every large company with 100 or more employees, has to hire 2-5 people with disabilities. It doesn’t work properly because companies are not focusing on inclusion. They are only focusing on hiring people with disabilities so they are not fined. They don’t see us as people, but as numbers. The government should care more about us. We are people. We have to be equal all the time.” -Emanuelle de Souza, Sargent Shriver International Global Messenger & Special Olympics Brazil Athlete Leader at @unitednations. #InclusionRevolution

specialolympics

“People with ID are marginalized in the disability community. We are often perceived as not being able to make decisions and think for ourselves. It’s very important that we have people with ID being leaders. It’s very important that people with ID are influencers & decision makers in the community and in the international development community. Intellectual disability oftentimes can’t be seen, but we exist. Our existence can only sometimes be seen when we take up key leadership positions.” -Nyasha Derera, Sargent Shriver International Global Messenger & Special Olympics Zimbabwe Athlete Leader, during our panel at the @unitednations. #InclusionRevolution

“I met Donzel his freshmen year & my junior year of high school. The way I met him was in our Unified PE Class & Unified Soccer. I didn’t realize how much of an impact he would make in my life the first day I met him. I would describe him as a energetic, happy, and loving person and friend. He always wants me to be happy and always has this positive aura around him. I personally believe that someone who loves, cares, and wants the best for you no matter what is what being a good friend is. Not only that, but always wants you to succeed and do better and that’s what Donzel helps me do. He gives me so much strength and power to continue doing what I love and that’s making a difference in the world. I’m beyond lucky and grateful that I get to do this with Donzel by my side and cheering both of us. He is my own personal cheerleader and I’m his. He will forever be one of the most important people in my life.” -Maggie // #BestFriendsDay #ChooseToInclude

"Getting on with it’ is my motto to survive in life...Getting on with it is what I always tell myself to do in life. Growing up with Down Syndrome, I struggled to express myself and got frustrated when people couldn’t understand me. As a teenager, I was aggressive. I shouted at others and got into fights...In the early days at the children’s home, I felt abandoned. If my own family didn’t want to care for me, who would?...I was so wrong. Over the years, I realized that if others are willing to trust and believe that I am capable of good, then I must not give up on myself. I have to get on with it." - Nakorn Thiptabmak, SO Thailand, @soasiapacific

“I used to think that people with intellectual disabilities were weird & no good. I avoided them because they behaved strangely. I never imagined that within 3 months, two of my best friends would be people I used to think were strange. I thank my teacher for opening my eyes. She volunteers as a coach with Special Olympics Malaysia, and encouraged me to come for a football match last year. The team has trained together since December. We have great rapport because we trust each other. It’s been super fun at the @worldgamesad because I have my best friends Jessieca & Tracy with me. We chat and play games almost all night until coach nags us to get some sleep. It doesn’t matter whether we go home with a medal. I’m happy just to be here with my BFFs.” -- Nornabilah Mohd Asmadi, Unified Partner, Malaysia. 📸: @soasiapacific

“My parents fled Afghanistan during the war, and I was born in Iran. Growing up was tough. My teachers didn’t know how to engage with children with learning disabilities. They abused and beat me. My family returned to Afghanistan when I was 8, but school wasn’t any easier. I kept failing and getting scolded. I hated school but I looked forward to sports. My parents own a sports equipment shop, and heard about Special Olympics. I joined when I was 12, and discovered my talent in athletics. My training has paid off. I got a silver medal at the @worldgamesad. First thing I did was call my mum. She was in tears. My mum’s dream was to be an athlete but it was tough back then for women in Afghanistan to live their dreams. It still isn’t easy especially for women with intellectual disabilities. I’m glad I found the courage to fulfill my dreams and hers.” - Nigin Afshar, Special Olympics Afghanistan. 📸: @soasiapacific
