It is #nationalpollinatorweek ! ⠀ ⠀ Pollinators, like these bees at Sunset Zoo, are facing threats to their well being all across the globe due to things like pesticides and habitat loss. We depend on pollinators for about a third of all that we consume, so these guys are crucial! And you can help them!⠀ ⠀ You can help pollinators by eliminating pesticides and herbicides, creating more natural settings and planting pollinator friendly plants in your garden! ⠀ ⠀ 📸 @we_chase_the_light

The red-crowned crane is one of the world's largest cranes. Native to Eastern Asia, the red-crowned crane is seen as a symbol of fidelity, good luck, love and long life. The red-crowned crane is listed as endangered. Wetland habitat loss, human disturbance, pollution and environmental contamination, invasive species, and the loss of habitat due to climate change have all led the population in their natural habitat to drop below 4,000. _____________________________________ @savingcranes is working to help these magnificent animals. Check out all they are doing at their website.
What’s a New Year’s Resolution? - Julian, probably. ——————————————————— This is from our enrichment bonanza Happy Zoo Year where we learned that chimpanzees are omnivores and can digest most of the same foods that we as people can, including chocolate and gingerbread like this, which they got for a fun treat! Usually their diet is mostly made up of fruits, seeds, nuts, leaves, flowers and insects! ——————————————————— How’s your New Year’s Resolution going? Share your progress and we’ll share it with Julian. 📸:Keeper Amelia

Due to weather and wind conditions, Sunset Zoo will be closed today, November 25th. Zoo Staff has already prepped the Zoo and the animals are all safe and warm. Please be safe out there today and we will keep you updated about the status of the Zoo for tomorrow!
One of our resident Malayan tigers, Malik, has been under the weather. He has been moved into his indoor habitat where he is under the constant care of his keeper and the veterinarian team. The vet team has done several tests and is still working to pin point the exact issue for his poor health and lack of appetite. Malik’s keepers are monitoring his health and doing everything they can to entice him to eat and combat his lethargy. Sunset Zoo is committed to Malik’s health and his quality of life, and we are working hard to take care of him. Malik’s brother, Hakim, has also been checked out and he is healthy and in good condition. We are confident that Malik’s condition is not contagious and that Hakim will not be in any harm by staying near his brother. Hakim will have access to the tiger yard should he chose to go outside. We will post updates on Malik’s condition as we get them. Thank you for supporting Malik and his care team through this difficult time.
Candy corn is the worst Halloween candy in existence. Might as well pass out fruit. Thank you for coming to my TED talk. Sincerely, Charlie

Happy #WorldChimpanzeeDay ! Sunset Zoo has the best chimpanzees, in our very humble, biased opinion, and correct opinion. To prove this to everyone, we are going to have a little meet the troupe today! Ready?! Ok! Swipe along to learn about each member! First up is Susie! At 65, Susie is the oldest chimp in human care. Everyone from keepers to guests to volunteers love this sweet girl. Catch her hanging out in her bucket or with her blankie in the shade! Hi Susie! 👋 Next is Julian! Julian is the only adult male and he is 40 years old. He’s is the father to Nia and Koto. Julian’s favorite part of the day is chow time! Hi Julian 👋 Next is Hazina! She’s 31, mom to Nia and Koto, and an avid pear consumer. She loves snuggle time with Koto and is an amazing mom. Hi Hazina 👋 Next is Hususa! Hususa is Hazina’s 26 year old half sister. She is the calmest member of the troupe, an enrichment enthusiast, and major treat lover! Hi Hususa 👋 Next is 9 year old Nia! She is the troupe’s little scientist. Always curious and so smart, she is constantly trying to figure out how things work by taking them apart. Hi Nia 👋 And last but not least, is Nkurukoto! ‘Koto’ is the youngest member at 5 years old. He loves his basketballs, is always annoying his sister, Nia, and can be found snuggling up to Susie. He is getting bigger everyday and loves attention from his keepers! Hi Koto 👋
Happy 1st Birthday to Tucker! Our baby white-handed gibbon is growing so fast and so cute. If you’re at the zoo today, make sure to tell him happy birthday! PC: Keeper Amelia
PUPDATE! Can you believe how big they are? The maned wolf pups are approaching the 6 month mark so fast. They are starting to really get their color and develop their personalities! Vet team will be giving them their last round of puppy shots on Friday! PC 📸Keeper Amelia #SavingSpecies
The maned wolf pups had their 9 week check up this morning! The check up was performed by the amazing team at KSU Vet Team. They all received a physical, vaccines, & a microchip. While the pups were not overwhelmingly thrilled with their early morning appointments, everyone was very happy with their growth and overall health! #behindthescenes
Koto is 5 years old today! The youngest member of Sunset Zoo’s chimpanzee troop is sweet, playful, and so ornery, but we love him anyways! We celebrated with a fun enrichment for the whole troop that was set up by our amazing keepers. Happy birthday Koto!
Sunset Zoo is so pretty in the snow ❄️ don’t worry, our keepers are working so hard to make sure our animal friends are warm and cozy!
Check out this cute new face at the Zoo! Isn’t she otterly adorable? And our latest babies -red panda and white-handed gibbon- are thriving and getting so big! Come say hi to Abigail, Tucker, and Xing Xing!
It's is International Red Panda Day! Our dynamic duo, Gary and Sammy, are on our Asian Trail, where you can find them sleeping in the trees, eating bamboo, snacking on some fruit, or chillin in their den. In the wild, red pandas roam the eastern Himalayas. However, like many other species, the quick deforestation of their home is causing a rapid decline in their population, placing them on the endangered species list. International Red Panda Day is here to encourage people to learn about these adorable animals and how we can make a difference to make sure they don't disappear. Learn more at RedPandaNetwork.Org.
