“I love ambient music that doesn’t shy away from being highly melodic. Maybe we just need it, it’s a counterpoint to the crazy world, it’s a counterpoint to your outerworld and you create an inner world that’s changing at your own pace.” @alexsomersmusic on Riceboy Sleeps, which was performed for the first time with @iamjonsi at #VividLIVE #riceboysleeps #jonsi @jonsi.and.alex Photo by @prudenceupton

“The record is very understated — it kind of embraces smallness in a way that is just inherent to everything we do, and for that reason, we never played it live. When it was brought to our attention that the record was going to have its 10th birthday, it felt nice to just do as a gesture towards it, to recognise it and fully realise it in a way we never had.” @alexsomersmusic on Riceboy Sleeps, which was performed for the first time with @iamjonsi at #VividLIVE #riceboysleeps #jonsi @jonsi.and.alex Photo by @prudenceupton

Dan Potra designed the costumes spanning the fashionable decades of Brett Whiteley's life. @operaaustralia’s principals and chorus members alike dazzle on stage and behind the scenes at in the corridors of the Sydney Opera House with sartorial Australiana, glamour and extravagant details. The costumes in Whiteley revel in the antipodean aesthetic of the era — think Jenny Kee, thongs, '70s glam and Hawaiian shirts. Whiteley is on now until July 30. “In improvising terms, Washington was very much his own show's star. As with his compositional ideas, he didn't deal in polite chamber jazz, preferring grand gestures and hair-raising climaxes, and his solo on Black Man became a wild fire of apocalyptic scale, blazing through the thickets of drums and cymbals.” - @sydneymorningherald Kamasi Washington returns to play the Concert Hall round in October 2019. #kamasiwashington #jazz #jazz🎷 #sydneyoperahouse

Visionary, cult experimental performer, musical surrealist: 69 year-old African American artist Lonnie Holley is a junkyard poet of modern culture. He brought improvisional performance with spacey loops, jazzy percussion, and stream-of-consciousness vocals to two incredible performances in the Utzon Room for #VividLIVE. As mythical as he is musically gifted, Holley was born in racially segregated Birmingham, Alabama, the seventh of 27 children, raised by a burlesque dancer and traded, he says, for a bottle of whiskey as an infant. Since the late ’70s he has dedicated his life to improvisational creativity, moving between sculpture, found art, and music born of struggle and curiosity. Miraculous Trajectories is a brand-new film concert made by acclaimed artist Cheng Ran in collaboration with experimental electronic musician Shao Yanpeng. Keaton Henson’s Six Lethargies was a musical experience like no other. The culmination of over three years of work from the musician, artist and composer, Keaton set out to create a challenging experience that would help audiences understand what depression and anxiety feel like. The resulting Six Lethargies is a stunning, mind-altering experiment, using data from previous audience members – hooked up to biometric sensors – to give real-time responses to the music, and alter the visual and lighting design during the performance. Known for his inability to perform live due to anxiety, through Six Lethargies Keaton handed his story over to the Opera Australia orchestra. In attendance on the night, though not performing himself, he allowed them to be his voice, as well as providing human connection and empathetic insight, all the while asking the audience ‘if I write how it feels to me, will it make you feel the same?’ Photography by @daniel.boud #KeatonHenson #VividLIVE #sydneyoperahouse #vivid #composer #artist #musician #SixLethargies #vividsydney
