T E A C H x M E N T A L H E A L T H | great afternoon meet with Ross @teachertoolkit talking all things education and mental health and also fitting in time to record a snippet for his podcast! Anyone who knows me knows how hard I have tried to champion mental health within schools, in particular looking at ways to support teachers to support their students to remain in school. Great to bounce around ideas with Ross and consider the obstacles that teachers face in a climate of increasing government cuts. #healthymind #health #healthy #wellbeing #wellness #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #mentalwellbeing #lifestyle #healthylifestyle #healthymindhealthybody #childhealth #mumsofinsta #dadsofinstagram #parentingishard #teacher #wednesday #wednesdaywisdom

I R R E S P O N S I B L E | from @ww toxic rebrand to one that embodies 'wellness' but still epitomises all that is wrong with diet culture..restriction, faddy plans that trigger overeating, inevitable weight gain and a disordered relationship with food both peri and post-plan to the meaningless and damaging celebrity campaigns like @imogen_thomas @dropawayuk that sell you a 'detox' weight loss solution. This is DAMAGING to the mental and physical health of our children and young people (and to our own) It fuels our body image concerns and keeps us trapped in a vicious cycle of disordered eating which can often lead to the development of eating disorders and co-morbid mental health conditions. Word of note: we all have a natural detox system within our bodies - it's called our liver!! F E E L I N G A N X I O U S | we all feel anxious now and again...feeling nervous, butterflies in overdrive in your tummy. Sometimes feeling anxious can be quite helpful, remember that driving test or that interview date. Feeling anxious in the lead up to something can force us to prepare and focus. However in some cases, anxiety for others can be a disabling cluster of symptoms. It affects some to such a degree that they actually avoid doing things. They may isolate themselves from loved ones. They may find it too challenging to walk out of the front door each morning to go places that others wouldn't think twice over. Even school or work may be an issue. It may also start to affect their mood and they may feel quite depressed. If you are worried that you or someone you care about is experiencing anxiety that is impacting on day to day life, book an appointment with the GP. #anxiety #butterflies #stress #panic #mentalhealth #mentalwellness #mentalwellbeing #mentalhealthawareness #wellbeing #wellness #wednesdaymood #wednesday #healthymind #healthymindandbody #health #healthy #lifestyle #mind #mindfulness #mindset

A N O T H E R D A Y | another appalling headline from the @dailyexpressuk no less. Everything he said. No words.👇🏼#Repost @mattzhaig with @get_repost ・・・ Demons. I hate that word. It is a hangover from when depressed people were thought to be possessed by literal demons. From the days when even a superstitious king (James I) could write a book on Demonology. The idea of demons implies nothing can be done. And that it is a moral punishment. Maybe for having too much fun... You don’t have demons. You have a mind which responds to shit. No doubt one of the things George Michael’s mind responded to, in his later years, was the way the media sensationalised his life into the tragedy of the fallen pop star. The whole idea that people fighting mind shit are on some inevitable downward tragic path is toxic. L E T S T A L K | yesterday evening @bbcpanorama the spot light was firmly on child mental health, how stretched services are and the impact this is having on young people and their families. As a frustrated professional yet to see the government's delivery on extra funding, I have channelled my energy into this platform to not just raise awareness but to share practical strategies to support not only parents and carers but teachers, social workers, extended family etc to know how best to support a young person in distress. This morning's post, I wanted to go back to basics and talk about communication. It is key. Ever think how to go about talking to your child if your gut is telling you there is something to be worried about? My daughter is 4 whilst some days I can sit her down like this, both of us with drinks in hand (tea in mine, milk in hers) other times I am having to check in with her in between her arguing with her Happyland figurines or whilst I am being forcefed plastic cake and cups of fake tea. The reality is there is no 'right' way to have a conversation but here are a few pointers I use in practice.efore having a conversation with your child, think TLC...time, location and child. First TIME, is this the right time to have the conversation. Perhaps it is the end of a long day for both of you? Maybe you’ve got to be somewhere in 10 mins and are pushed for time? Make sure that you set aside a decent amount of time to have a conversation after all you don’t know what it may bring up. Switch off any distractions such as phones if you have to, to limit your chances of being distracted. LOCATION is this the right place to have the conversation. Over the kitchen table or in a busy shopping centre may not be conducive with your child sharing sensitive information so make sure it is somewhere they feel comfortable and finally CHILD. What works for one child will not necessarily work for another. Chatting over action man heroes informally may work great for your 6 year old son but less so for your 16 year old. Think about your approach and face the fear of getting them to open up. #kidsincrisis #panorama #child #mentalhealth #tuesday #mentalwellbeing

E M O J I | if you know me you know I love an emoji. I actively encourage the patients I see to use emojis as a means of communicating how they are feeling to others. Often when we are in the grips of perhaps depression, anxiety or other struggles with our emotional and mental health, the last thing that we feel up to or able of doing is sharing our distress with others. We may have to overcome problems with low self esteem and self worth 'do people even care how I am feeling' or we may be lacking in energy or motivation to share our thoughts. Using an emoji communicates a multitude of words in the simplest of pictures. It can become a universal language that can lead to a particular action. A Mum I see knows that by receiving a text from her daughter with a sad face emoji that she needs to initiate a conversation with her and take her out for some fresh air for some one on one time. Another Mum knows that if her son sends her an 😩 face that he is at imminent risk of self harm. Start using emojis today, agree a universal language and the subsequent actions and liberate your inability to use words at the most testing of times. C O M M U N I C A T E | How do you #facefear of having a conversation with someone you are worried about. There is the fear of saying the wrong thing, what if I make them clam up? What if I make things worse? I have developed an easy to use mnemonic/aide memoire to help anyone who has concerns about someone else's emotional/mental health have a structure to your conversation rather than it feel like a flurry of uncontained panic. Not sure how to broach them? First and foremost, think FACE. F IS FOR FACE TO FACE. Do you have opportunity to speak to the person face to face about your concerns? A IS FOR BEING ATTENTIVE, make sure you listen to what the person is telling you. Ask them a question? Then listen to the response they give - don't talk over them. C IS FOR CALM. Keep calm. Easier said than done but you need to instil confidence in that person that you can take on whatever they throw at you and that you won't crumble under the pressure. E IS ENTER THE SITUATION. Then FEAR State the FACTS (f is for facts). Tell them what you have noticed. E IS FOR EXPLAIN. This is where you come in. This is your chance to explain why this worries you. The key bit when explaining is to point out to them why this is different from before. It is all well and good saying they seem quiet, but explaining it in the context of ‘you seem really quiet, normally I can’t get you to be quiet’ really highlights the change. A IS AGREE AN ACTION this is where you both come together to decide on what to do about your (possibly shared) concerned. ‘If things don’t get better in a couple of days, shall we go to the GP or will you book an appointment in to see them’. We do this subconsciously with ourselves anyway when we are physically unwell. If this rash doesn’t clear by the end of the week, I will go see someone. R IS FOR REVIEW if you agree an action, make sure you stick to it. This is holding you and them accountable that if things don't improve you move on to access support sooner. #facefear #mentalhealth #mentalwellbeing #wellbeing #wellness #healthymind #mind #lifestyle #healthylifestyle #sunday #sundaymorning

W A T C H | I urge everyone to watch this on Monday. I could not agree with you more @seanfletchertv Increasing awareness of mental health has no doubt been pivotal in the last 12-18 months but what it does is increase demand on already stretched resources. We need to make sure the government delivers on its promise of extra funds to ensure our children and young people are not waiting months, perhaps upwards of a year before accessing the support they need. #Repost @seanfletchertv with @get_repost ・・・ Our @bbcpanorama on how the cash strapped Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services is letting down a generation of kids, is among @guardian’s picks of the day. Perhaps you know a child who struggles with school at the best of times, perhaps the holidays for you has confirmed your worst suspicion that something might be going on for your child emotionally- something that was masked by the structure of the school routine? Perhaps you are worried that your child will struggle to make it through the first hour, let alone the first day? Within my @stella_telegraph article yesterday, I mention the importance of checking in with your child emotionally, regularly. Why don't you get started by creating your own mental health traffic light system at home? Get the whole family involved. Create arrows for each member of the family. W O R K P L A C E | we have heard the welcome news that the Duke of Cambridge is launching an initiative looking at mental health in the workplace with @mindcharity and @heads_together This is something that I have used my platform to talk about and similarly share some tips on. I am a huge advocate of honesty, particularly when it comes to mental health in the workplace. If you are feeling overwhelmed, stressed with looming deadlines would you feel brave enough to approach your boss about it or would the fear of being overseen for a promotion, your capability questioned or even be let off prove all too much for you? One of the things I have learnt is quite often the fear of having a 'conversation about mental health in the workplace' is as much a fear for your employer as it is for you. This is why I developed my 3 Ws and H for conversations in the workplace. An example: it may be that your boss has given you an extra project to manage and it has made you feel more stressed and anxious which is impacting on your ability to concentrate and focus on the tasks you have at hand, it is affecting your sleep, you have no time to join your team for lunch which is ultimately affecting your morale and you are the last to leave the office and are barely getting any down time before you sleep (well atleast try to!) and repeat. So approach your boss. Sit down together. Tell them WHAT they can help you with, be specific! 'I am feeling overwhelmed with the latest project you have given me. I am able to manage the initial task but i feel the second has stretched me too thin' then identify WHO can help you with this? Perhaps you have identified someone that could jump on board with the second project or you and your employer can think of an alternative person to help out, thirdly HOW can they help you? They can help you by project managing the second and lastly WHY would it help. It would help because it would free you up to manage just the initial project then review!#wwhw #whowhathowwhy #positivity #bepositive #positive #pma #fitness #nutrition #mentalhealth #mentalwellbeing #wellbeing #wellness #health #healthy #healthymind #mind #mindfulness #eatwell #sleepwell #friday

E N E R G Y D R I N K S B A N | welcome news on the governments restrictions on energy drinks in children and young people. Everyday without fail, I see children with low mood, anxiety symptoms (racing heart, feeling fidgety and restless) and difficulties sleeping present in clinic. This may be a new experience for them or it may have got worse recently if they are known to struggle with those symptoms in the first place. I ALWAYS ask about caffeine consumption, specifically about energy drink consumption. Some kids I see are drinking upwards of 5 cans/day of the stuff that would be enough to make anyone feel more than a little rotten!Even before I consider what alternative therapies are available for symptoms I ask them to cut down and then stop drinking these high sugared, high caffeine foodstuffs and what do you know...their symptoms settle down and completely resolve. I am not saying this is true for every young person struggling with mental health difficulties but from my experience it makes sense that copious amounts of caffeine and sugar will feign a racing heart of anxiety, crashes of mood in mood disorders, difficulty sleeping from mood and anxiety disorders to name but a few.#mentalhealth #mentalwellbeing #wellbeing #wellness #healthymind #healthymindhealthybody #teacher #health #healthy #mind #mindfulness #mum #mothersofinstagram #healthylifestyle #lifestyle #dadsofinstagram #energydrinks #mentalhealthawareness #themindmedic #energydrinkban #anxiety #stress #keepcalm #thursday

S E L F H A R M | whether it is a rise in self-harm or that young people are coming forward and sharing their difficulties with it more, the fact remains I am certainly seeing a lot of young people, boys and girls that struggle with this on a daily if not multiple times a day basis. Barriers to sharing self harm with a friend, adult, teacher or parent include the shame, the fear that they will be judged or reprimanded for it and the guilt that they will upset someone. It is important to remember that whilst it can be incredibly distressing to find out that your child is self harming, this is a way of them expressing their distress or coping with quite difficult emotions. It might be impossible for them to put into words exactly how they are feeling. They may feel numb and the act of self harm enables them to feel anything other than nothing. If you find out that a child is self harming the most important thing to do initially is to stay calm and non-judgemental. As difficult as it may be, you need to convey to your child that you can emotionally take on whatever they choose (if anything) to share with you. Even if they don't initially, you send a strong message to them that it is something you are open and comfortable talking about. #mentalhealth #mentalwellbeing #wellbeing #wellness #healthymind #healthymindhealthybody #teacher #health #healthy #mind #mindfulness #mum #mothersofinstagram #healthylifestyle #lifestyle #dadsofinstagram #the5sensestoolkit #mentalhealthawareness #themindmedic #selfharmrecovery #anxiety #stress #keepcalm #wednesday

Set aside a worry slot at the same time each day. Make sure you remain connected with people around you. Graded reintroduction to activities or situations you may be avoiding. 3️⃣ Cutting down on Google and internet searches that inevitably will just fuel your anxiety. Reduce your body checks. May be difficult to go cold turkey so reduce gradually and set yourself small, achievable goals 4️⃣challenge your anxious thoughts. What evidence do you have for them? 5️⃣ Lifestyle: reduce caffeine (tea/coffee/energy drinks), exercise and clean up your sleep. Poor sleep and increased caffeine can exacerbate anxiety symptoms. It could ultimately be a loss to the natural world because people won't understand it anymore." #phoneaddict #technoaddict #lookup #socialmedia #healthymind #mind #mindfulness #healthy #lifestyle #mentalhealth #mentalwellbeing #wellbeing #wellness

W H E R E D O W E | draw the line? In my eyes, any derogatory comment or action towards another person with the intention of hurting that individual (regardless of what they have done or whether they are in the public space and should 'get used to it') is bullying. Plain and simple. Being subjected to a torrent of abuse is not a normal part of growing up and a normal part of the adult experience both in or out of the spotlight. In a recent @theeconomist article, bullying across all social media platforms and the unanimous negative impact on young people's mental wellbeing was highlighted. This escalation from a 'fleeting I didn't think comment' by @charlottegshore into something that represents everything that is wrong with social media resulting in her enduring her own barrage of online abuse is simply unacceptable. Is it any wonder that 63% of Instagram users report feeling miserable?! And are we at all surprised that a huge proportion will go on to develop clinical mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety. #mentalhealth #kids #antibullying #mentalwellbeing #wellbeing #wellness #healthymind #healthymindhealthybody #health #healthy #mind #mindfulness #mum #mothersofinstagram #healthylifestyle #lifestyle #dadsofinstagram #childhealth #mentalhealthawareness #themindmedic #bullying #charlottecrosby @adlgeorge1 #the5sensesplan #the5sensestoolkit #sunday
