My Book of the Month is Colum McCann’s “Apeirogon,” set within the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. How does someone tackle an intractable problem? You tell a story ... your enemy’s story, and he tells yours. This is the tried and tested model of reconciliation used by Narrative 4, Colum’s international organisation that gathers rooms full of assailants exchanging their narratives in front of each other. The effect is utterly electrifying and devastatingly effective, I’ve seen it happen myself. A completely novel method of reconciliation and common empathy. Colum’s new book, uses a similar technique: Two fathers from opposing sides of the conflict with near identical stories offering hope amid hopelessness. Empathy has to be the truest art.
