Meet P75. This young female mountain lion is the latest addition to the US National Park Service’s study of mountain lions in the Santa Monica Mountains, California. The collar looks unsightly but the team are making well-informed decisions when it comes to collaring animals for tracking and can ensure that it won’t effect the lion’s behaviour. @CaliforniaDFW

Forest guard Sudha Dhurve (centre) showed her experience and training when she stood her ground when confronted by a growling tiger on patrol in Madhya Pradesh’s Satpura tiger reserve. Her colleagues - Arjun and Vishnu - followed her lead with the trio locked in a 90 minute face-off with the tiger less than 10 metres away. More than a test of nerves, but Dhurve’s comments afterwards? “Just part of my everyday job!” https://www.thebetterindia.com/169439/madhya-pradesh-tiger-brave-woman-forest-guard/

A @lead_ranger update: ・・・ Kenya, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Tanzania. As we speak, skills coaches are teaching life saving skills back to their peers, as Skills Coaches - Ranger Life Saver. We provide high quality instructor and leadership courses to partnering protected area law enforcement organizations. Through our donors and supporters we are able to provide these (refresher) courses, training materials and operational kit free of charge. In return, these organizations invest internally in training and building competencies within their organization. We have one simple goal: more intrinsic instructor and leadership capacity within existing Ranger organizations. Through well trained, well equipped and well-led Ranger teams, together we protect wildlife for future generations. #leadership #leadfromthefront #leadbyexample #theresnoiinteam #wildlifeprotection #capacitybuilding #justgettingonwithit #tccc #tecc #tacticalmedicine The LEAD Ranger program is a collaborative initiative of @iapf, @thingreenline and @rangercampus

Good news alert! A repost of the first sighting of a rare and wild African black leopard in 100 years (captured by @willbl ). In today’s world, we’re often assailed with information and imagery that fuels our outrage and despair. Amid all this mess and darkness, it’s easy to lose hope for what may come tomorrow. But occasionally something shows up – a song, a book, a quote, or, in this case, a photograph – and it shines so brilliantly and wonderfully that we’re reminded of a thing we all inherently know: If together we direct our light into the gloom, then everything might just be okay. And by tending toward kindness and compassion we will brighten tomorrow, but if only we begin today. ・・・ #camtraptions #cameratrap #blackpanther #wildlifephotography #wildlife #africa #leopard #animallovers #animals @willbl

The critically endangered Amur Leopard, found in southwestern Russia, was once down to a population of approximately 30. Latest estimates are around 100. We as a community can contribute in many ways to the protection and survival of endangered wildlife. It's always with great sadness that we share news of a Ranger losing his or her life in the line of duty. It's alleged that Wildlife Ranger Erlan Nurghaliev of Kazakhstan was beaten to death by poachers. This highlights to threat to saiga (an endangered antelope species) and, of course, to the people tasked with defending them. Rangers risk and often lose their lives defending our world's natural wonders. We must support them. Today we pay our respects to another fallen hero and to the family he leaves behind.
The Thin Green Line Foundation and Sumatran Ranger Project are delighted to announce that we have secured funding for the project 'Community Ranger Conservation in the Leuser Ecosystem'. The project has been awarded an Australian Aid: Friendship Grant by the Department for Foreign Affairs and Trade. The $50,000 AUD grant will support a team of Community Rangers to reduce degradation and protect keystone species in the forests of the Leuser Ecosystem in Indonesia - one of the very last places on Earth where the Sumatran orangutan, tiger, elephant and rhinoceros co-exist. This is a wonderful example of the work The Thin Green Line does to ensure Rangers are supported to carry out their work. #FriendshipGrants #AustralianAid #HelpingOthers #rangers #conservation #Indonesia #leuser #sumatra #DFAT @sumatranrangerproject @dfat @thingreenlinefoundation Photos: @jasonsavagephoto

#Repost @biglifeafrica ・・・ In 2016 there was a bit of a stir (rightly) when giraffes turned up as 'vulnerable' on the IUCN red list, following a reported decline of 30% in three decades. It was a surprise, because everyone thought giraffes were doing just fine. Now it turns out there might be as few as 97,500 left on the continent, far fewer than the number of elephants alive. Happily, these gentle animals have found a haven and are thriving in the greater Amboseli ecosystem. Aerial counts in 2010 and 2018 show that giraffe numbers in Amboseli and neighbouring Enduimet in Tanzania have MORE THAN DOUBLED in that period, from 2546 to 5312 individuals. Despite this success, threats remain. Giraffes are one of the most desirable species for bushmeat poachers, and represent a significant return of meat (and therefore money) for the effort invested in poaching the animal. Just two days ago Big Life rangers arrested two poachers with approximately 300kg of giraffe meat. The arrest is a message, that the risk of being caught is so high that it is not worth killing in the first place. #giraffe #kimanasanctuary #amboseli #kenya #biglifefoundation #rangers #antipoaching
Rangers. Conservation's frontline heroes.
We are faced with two futures. One is a future in which the many great creatures of this planet are lost, rendered nothing but a page in our history books. The other is a brighter future in which they are defended and helped to thrive. The Rangers of the world, the men and women who go out on patrol to stop the losses, are choosing this brighter path. And we at The Thin Green Line Foundation are behind them all the way. #GiveToday #GetBehindTheLine GIVE: https://thingreenline.org.au/donate/
So proud of the game-changing work we're doing with LEAD Ranger. #Repost @lead_ranger In protected area law enforcement, community is everything. Most Ranger patrols are done inside the protected area, without meeting with community members on the fringes. However, when a suspect is confronted, the community relies on us to use proportional and subsidiary force, within the laws and regulations set out for Ranger operations. As part of the LEAD Ranger program, we teach Rangers the principles of how much force may be used lawfully in case of self-defence, or when suspects are resisting arrest. The Force Continuum gives Rangers the confidence to confront actions by the suspect(s) as safely and effectively as possible. This is a subject that is not taken lightly, as it directly affects Ranger safety, suspect safety, accountability, convictions and community relations. Without community support, effectively protecting the wild becomes an impossible mission. The LEAD Ranger program is a collaborative initiative of @int.anti.poaching.foundation @thingreenlinefoundation and @rangercampus

Wildlife crime. Can’t stand it? Stand with Rangers before this End of Financial Year (June 30). On a small island off the coast of Terengganu, Malaysia, with the backing of The Thin Green Line Foundation, a team of Rangers tasked with defending endangered turtles carries out anti-poaching patrols, putting an end to illegal gill nets killing these wonderful creatures. “Our project will mitigate the threat of fishing nets, which will directly benefit turtles by removing objects from their environment that could directly result in their death. Furthermore, by handing out fines and making arrests to fishermen, we will deter other fisherman from carrying out similar activities.” -- Lang Tengah Turtle Watch For $600 ($50 per month), we can supplement the salary of a Ranger on anti-poaching patrol. https://thingreenline.org.au/donate/ #RecogniseRangers #RespectRangers #StandWithRangers

A couple of years back the giraffe was silently added to the IUCN endangered species list. To imagine a world in which these giants aren't loping about is to imagine a world greatly diminished. The reasons for their endangered status are many and complex, but we can be sure that Rangers on the frontline play a key role in protecting them. If you want to invest in the people who defend wildlife and wild places, please do so before the End of Financial Year (June 30) for a tax deductible donation.
