Apricots laid out to dry in flat baskets at Altit Fort in the Hunza Valley, Northern Pakistan. Hunza was once speculated to be the location of Shangri-La, a fictional place described in the 1933 novel Lost Horizon by British author James Hilton. Hilton describes Shangri-La as a mystical, harmonious valley, gently guided from a lamasery, enclosed in the western end of the Kunlun Mountains. Shangri-La has become synonymous with any earthly paradise, particularly a mythical Himalayan utopia – a permanently happy land, isolated from the world. Hilton visited the Hunza Valley in northern Pakistan, close to the Chinese border, a few years before Lost Horizon was published; hence it is a popularly believed inspiration for Hilton’s physical description of Shangri-La. Being an isolated green valley surrounded by mountains, enclosed on the western end of the Himalayas, it closely matches the description in the novel; also, in an ironic reversal on the story, due to increased exposure to ultraviolet radiation, inhabitants of the high-altitude parts of the valley appear to age quickly. However, because the Hunza Valley does not have Tibetan culture and lacks Buddhist religion, it could not have been the inspiration for the cultural context for Hilton’s story. @tribaleye #pakistan #HunzaValley #AltitFort #Karimabad #shangri-la #documentaryphotography #reportage #himalayas #southasia #asia #photooftheday #natgeo100contest #karakoramhighway #karakoram

Island hopping in the Philippines accompanying a Lonely Planet author on a book update … Since the 1970s, Moalboal has developed a tourism industry based on recreational diving and beaches. Directly offshore is a stupendous coral wall, so you can step out of your hotel accommodation, don mask & snorkel and dip into the azure blue waters for some outstanding marine life (including Moalboal’s world-renowned sardine run). Karsha (/Kursha) Gompa  is a Buddhist monastery in the Padum Valley of the Zanskar region of Jammu and Kashmir in northern India. Karsha is the largest and most important monastery in Zanskar. It is attributed to Padmasambhava, and there are ancient rock-carvings at the site. The oldest remaining structure, an Avalokiteshvara temple, contains wall paintings which seem to associate it with the era of Rinchen Zangpo (958-1055). The monastery is under the control of the younger brother of the Dalai Lama. Here photographed lamas enjoying proceedings at the Karsha Gustor festival, which celebrates the victory of good over evil. Gunung (Mount) Rinjani is an active 3726m (12,224ft) volcano on the island of Lombok, Indonesia. Towards the top of the volcano is a large, lake-filled lake known as Segara Anak or Anak Laut (Child of the Sea.) The lake is estimated to be about 200m (660ft) deep. A few days after I took in this tranquil scene the smaller volcano in the caldera, Gunung Barujari erupted and ejected ash many kilometres into the sky, forcing an emergency evacuation of the area. Buddhist monks and novices at Shwedagon Pagoda, Rangoon. Buddhism in Burma is predominantly of the Theravada tradition, practised by almost 90% of the country’s population. It is the most religious Buddhist country in terms of the proportion of monks in the population and proportion of income spent on religion. Adherents are most likely found among the dominant Bamar people, Shan, Rakhine, Mon, Karen, Zo, and Chinese who are well integrated into Burmese society. Monks, collectively known as sangha, are venerated members of Burmese society. Among many ethnic groups in Burma, including the Bamar and Shan, Theravada Buddhism is practised in conjunction with nat worship, which involves the placation of spirits who can intercede in worldly affairs. Theravadins send their children to monasteries to receive a Buddhist education, learning the Pāli Canon, the life story of Gautama Buddha, the 550 Jataka tales - most importantly the Ten Great Incarnations and the 38 Buddhist Beatitudes. On this day (29th October) 539 BCE the Persian king Cyrus II walked triumphantly into Babylon, the ancient Mesopotamian capital and seat of a huge empire that straddled the middle east. Iranian communities around the world mark this day as “Cyrus the Great Day” or “Cyrus Day”, روز کوروش October 29 (7th of Aban آبان) After taking Babylon, Cyrus proclaimed himself "King of Babylon... king of the four corners of the world" in the famous Cyrus Cylinder. The text of the cylinder portrays the victorious Cyrus addressing the Babylonian god Marduk, and how Cyrus had improved the lives of Babylonians, repatriated displaced peoples, and restored cult sanctuaries and temples. Some assert that the cylinder represents a form of human rights charter, whilst other historians place it in the context of a long-standing Mesopotamian tradition of new rulers beginning their reigns with declarations of reforms. Cyrus the Great's dominions comprised the largest empire the world had ever seen. Detail of a bas relief at the Archaemenid city of Persepolis. Fars Province, central Iran. Leh (Hindi: लेह), Tibetan: གླེ ), Ladakh in the Indian Himalaya (Jammu & Kashmir state) is nestled in the palm of spectacular mountains. Here a dawn exposure taken on a recent trip. Leh district, with an area of 45,110 square km, is the second largest district in India. Leh is at an altitude of 3,524 metres (11,562 ft) and was heavily damaged in 2010 by the sudden floods caused by a cloud burst. Between Hundar and Diskit lie several kilometres of sand dunes, and bactrian camels graze in the neighbouring “forests” of seabuckthorn.
