For my research, I’ve been doing a quasi residency in my local barbershop where I’ve been cutting my hair for two years now. In this particular barbershop, you have al lot of Afro-Caribbean and Afro-Surinamese men that visit bi-weekly. I am fascinated by the contrast between hyper-masculinity and intimacy between barber and client. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Hello, I am Kevin Osepa ( @kevinisburning) and I'm taking over Unseen’s Instagram account to show you some of my work I am doing for ING Unseen Talent Award! For the ING Collection, I am developing a work where I explore the significance of the barbershop in the life of black men and it’s relationship with homophobia. These communities are usually seen as safe spaces where black men (especially in western societies where racism plays a role) can function. But in this same space you also find hyper masculinity that is paired with homophobia that makes it unwelcoming for black gay men. Based on the sexuality and the perception of it, black gay men risk losing valued memberships to institutions that have a legacy of uplifting and uniting black communities. — In the run up of Unseen Amsterdam 2019 we are happy to introduce you all five finalists of the ING Unseen Talent Award 2019! As a form of resistance, a lot of gay black men teach themselves how to cut their hair to avoid entering black barbershops. Todavia hay esperanzas de volar (There is still hope to fly). Drawing by Elizabeth, Havana 2019. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I met Elizabeth at my second day in Havana. First willing to introduce me to some women that she supports through her volunteering against domestic violence, she finally decided to share her personal story with me. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Hello, I am Ulla Deventer ( @ulladeventer) and I'm taking over Unseen’s Instagram account to show you some of my work I am doing for ING Unseen Talent Award! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Loaded with stereotypes, especially about women that can be traced back to colonial times, Cuba provides me a complex place to research on the interdependency of women on social norms and the balance of gender and power. Collaborating with Cuban feminists, I intend to break the binary way of looking at gender balance and to visualize how it feels to be part of a society that is characterized as being machista. How does this culture influence the women’s personal ideas of independency, love and sexuality? — In the run up of Unseen Amsterdam 2019 we are happy to introduce you all five finalists of the ING Unseen Talent Award 2019!
