The grasslands around L. Edward are one of the most bio diverse landscapes in the world. Historically, this savanna area was home to some of the highest concentrations of large mammals on the continent, yet years of insecurity and habitat destruction have led to severe population decline. Numbers are slowly bouncing back, however, and large herds like that of the African buffalo can still be found roaming these plains today. . . #drc #rdc #congo #virunga #virunganationalpark #buffalo #africanbuffalo #capebuffalo #savanna #grasslands #ecosystem #restoration #restorationecology #bigmammals

Primates, our closest living relatives, are currently under extraordinary threat. Virunga is home to 22 primate species and is the only park in the world where three taxa of great ape occur. And while population numbers are thankfully on the rise for mountain gorillas, their closest cousins, the eastern lowland gorillas, are disappearing at an alarming rate. Scientists estimate that this gorilla species has declined by more than 50% since the 1990s and they are now listed as critically endangered. Eastern common chimpanzees, found only in a handful of east African parks, have suffered sharp decline and are listed as endangered. The Park’s savanna mammals such as hippos, elephants, lions and large herbivores have also tragically experienced a steep downward trend over the last 15 years. Poaching, insecurity and human encroachment are pushing these majestic animals into increasingly fragmented habitats, making their protection extremely challenging for Park. . . . Get involved in the conservation of great apes another endangered wildlife by supporting Virunga today! In honor of Earth Day, all donations will be matched (up to $25k). It is with profound sadness that Virunga National Park announces the death of Park Ranger Hakizimana Sinamenye Chadrack following serious injuries sustained during a wildlife related accident in the Park’s Central Sector. The incident occurred as Ranger Hakizimana was gathering water on the river’s edge on the morning of 29 March. Despite urgent medical care, he succumbed to his injuries on the night of 02 April. We are indebted to Ranger Hakizimana for his dedicated service to the conservation of Virunga and the protection of its communities and we offer our sincere condolences to his family at this difficult time. Hello everyone. My name is Tony. I am a baby eastern chimpanzee. Very recently, I was taken illegally from my family in a remote part of the forest. The Virunga Rangers heard about this and drove two days to come and save me. Then Virunga air wing gave me a lift into the safe hands of the caretakers at Lwiro Primates, where I am now safe and doing well with other orphaned chimpanzees like me. @lwiro_primates #Drc #rdc #congo #virunga #virunganationalpark #conservation #wildlifeconservation #lwiroprimates #chimpanzee #chimp #chimprescue

Virunga National Park is greatly saddened to confirm the death of Ranger Freddy Mahamba Muliro during an attack on a ranger position on Thursday, March 7th in the Park’s troubled Central Sector. Park Director, Emmanuel de Merode said, “We are in deep mourning for Ranger Freddy. It is a tragedy that his young life has been cut short in dedicated service to Virunga. Now more than ever, Ranger Freddy’s death highlights the very real threats to our rangers in their protection of Virunga National Park.” For a full statement, please click the link in our bio.

The Angolan colobus or sometimes referred to as the black-and-white colobus is a medium sized agile monkey found in the dense rainforest of central and east Africa and is one of 22 primates that occur in Virunga. They are most recognizable by their long white hair from their shoulders down, with the tail being mainly black with fluffy white fur on the end. The Angolan colobus are most active during the day where they can be seen leaping from tree to tree in the canopy, earning them the title of “acrobats of the forest.” Fun fact: Females remain in the natal group for life whereas males leave the group upon adulthood. #drc #rdc #virunga #virunganationalpark #primates #colobus #acrobats #conservation #primateconservation

Meet the Congohounds, the Ranger and canine unit tasked with protecting the Park’s endangered wildlife from poaching and animal trafficking. These bloodhounds and their Ranger handlers’ primary work is tracking poachers, but they also play a key role in finding injured Rangers and have even been used to locate lost children from communities surrounding the Park. Bloodhounds have an extraordinary ability to pick up a specific scent, even if it’s almost two weeks old, and track it over vast and difficult terrain for several days at a time. This dedicated team of humans and canines have played a crucial role in defending the mountain gorilla, elephant and hippo populations of Virunga. The Widows Sewing Workshop was officially opened in August of this year. It was created to help widows regain a sense of control over their lives after suffering the devastating loss of their Ranger husbands. These women have faced challenges that most people cannot imagine, yet they pick up the pieces and continue on with grace and determination. The goal of the Workshop is to help support these women to get beyond bare subsistence. Equally important, it aims to foster a sense of community and strengthen their optimism for what the future holds. YES SHE CAN! These ladies have worked so hard this year and were able to produce over 20,000 handmade crafts, doubling their production from last year. We salute their perseverance and bravery. They are an inspiration and are a reminder of the triumph of the human spirit, and hold a special place as members of Virunga’s team. Virunga is home to around one-third of the world’s endangered mountain gorillas as well as four gorillas who reside in the Senkwekwe Center, the only facility in the world that cares for mountain gorillas in captivity. Located at the Park HQ in Rumangabo, the Center’s inhabitants—Ndeze, Ndakasi, Matabishi, Musuka and bushbuck Pongo—were each victims of poachers or animal traffickers as infants. The orphans are cared for by Senkwekwe’s dedicated staff whose extraordinary work would not be possible without the help of individuals and organizations from around the world who have stepped up to support conservation efforts in Virunga.  Senkwekwe Center is a unique sanctuary offering the orphaned gorillas the chance to lead happy and secure lives in the lush forest enclosure, which was recently expanded this year. We kick off Week 1 of our journey into the Park by delving into the fascinating world of Virunga’s biodiversity.
