Up close and personal. I never thought that my deepest insecurity would become the impetus for starting my greatest blessing. Many of you already know my skin story and my rocky journey of trying one million and one things to try to clear my skin after a decade of struggling with cystic acne. I’m finally sitting down to write it the whole thing and am reminded of the pain I felt and how much self hate I had because of it. But that finding the light and Sakara at the end of the road was made it worth it. This food changes bodies and changes lives and if I had to feel some of that pain so that others don’t have to because of Sakara, then I have gratitude for that pain. Sending all of those who have felt the pain of acne and all other autoimmune related issues so much love and healing energy. Making memories. Time just seems to continue to fly by (can’t believe we’re already in June?!). Each week is a marathon filled with events and people and things to do—- but moments like these seem to slow time just a little bit. To create a moment that will be remembered, that will *get* remembered. Not a passing flash like trees flying by the car window as we drive through life, but an imprint that will last. A memory. Lots of memories made this weekend celebrating Hani & Adam’s wedding, spending time with friends/extended family (some who even flew in from London & LA to be there), skinny dipping in the pool and seeing the pure joy of simply splash around in the water. So much gratitude flowing for these moments. And hoping time slows a bit more this summer to make a few more. Memories.

I remember reading Gwyneth’s blog before it was cool (and perfectly designed). It was just Gwyneth, sharing her own journey through the wellness space. Trying out juice cleanses, colonics, and other “alternative healing things” and telling about her experience. She was an early pioneer in making wellness a part of the conversation. And helping to bring awareness to companies like ours. . It doesn’t mean that you need to do everything on the site, or that you shouldn’t question things (on or off her site), but it means you have the option to learn about other ways of thinking and methods that might work for you. . Thank you @stanford business school (and Kiki) for having us as guest speakers today. Before we started Sakara I had taken my GMAT and was applying to business school. I didn’t end up going to business school and I don’t have a formal MBA (though after building a business for 7+ years it feels like I do!), it was very cool to get to speak there. When life gets busy (like it is right now balancing btwn the book tour while still running a full-on business), I try to find moments to make it fun. @danielleduboise and I talk to each other a lot about how “work can be play and play can be work.” It’s all a matter of perspective (and attitude). . It takes actively searching for the fun in everything you do. Creating the fun and the positivity and joy. And taking advantage of those moments that the Universe gives you to have fun! Walking into Monday like 👊💥 It’s a big week this week (watch for our post tomorrow!!) and lots of things are happening. Focusing on staying healthy this week by eating my Sakara meals to support a healthy microbiome (where your immune system lives), doubling up on my probiotic, and *trying* to make it to bed at a decent hour. Even though I have a wellness company I admit I am not the best at taking the time for myself and making self care a priority. I use the meals as my hack for staying on track with food - all I have to do is open it and eat it, and it saves me time and brain space not having to think about what I’m going to eat (also makes sure that I actually eat on busy weeks like this!!) While in LA we got to partner with @hm for the launch of their Conscious Collection. We got to hear the Creative Advisor/former Head of Design for H&M, Ann-Sofie Johansson, speak on some of the company’s initiatives. They’re making some interesting pushes into using eco-friendly plant-based materials that I thought I’d share with you: . 🍊 A textile made out of orange pulp - the byproduct of making juice. 🍍 Pinatex made out pineapple leaves that they use to make plant-based leather alternative 🌱 An algae biomass that they use in their pool slides . Had to put up another picture with my soul sister @danielleduboise. Last week we spoke on a panel where were talked about some of the early days of starting Sakara and I thought to myself “Were we crazy?!?! How did we get through that?!” It was filled with early mornings and long nights, stressful uncertainty and taking risks, not to mention working out of a kitchen on a time clock like we were on an episode of Chop’d! Best birthday gift yesterday. Our very first billboard!! It’s crazy to see it in real life. It was just a dream for so long... Danielle and I used to walk around in Soho and look at the billboards and say “One of these days we’ll have one of these”. And now that day is finally here. . We chose the message of No Sacrifices for the billboard as a motto for the new year. You don’t have to sacrifice eating delicious foods, being with friends & family, or having fun to feel good in your body. There is an abundance of amazing foods you can eat and enjoy — and when you want to eat something, well, not so healthy, that’s fine too! This is a lifestyle. One with No Sacrifices. . I used to be scared of the ocean. It’s dark, a force and filled with the unknown. I wouldn’t swim, only dipped my toe in from the side. It wasn’t until I spent a week, one summer, living on the beach and Itay made me go in every single day— rain or shine— that I was able to overcome my fear. I started to understand the water, how to build up my body temperature to bear that first splash, how to duck under waves, or just float above and go with the flow. Now it’s one of my favorite places. One dive under the water changes my energy and washes away my worries. It’s different from my natural habitat, the desert. It’s in motion rather in stillness. Yet magical in its own way. Sometimes we fear what’s different or unknown. And when we finally take the plunge it changes our lives forever. Carrying this ocean intention with me this year— to push myself to take risks, dive in, and explore new worlds. What intentions are you setting for this year?

Congrats to @delightfuldeepi on her wedding day! 🎊 . This picture is from a few days ago when I met her in Mumbai, when we were walking through her neighborhood and followed the sound of women singing. Her mother invited us into their home and to participate in the tradition of grinding the turmeric that would be put on Deepika’s skin on her wedding day to make her glow. . Deepika is a dietician that helps people with cancer. Amazing that the person I met has dedicated her life to helping people through food and diet! . Thank you for being so kind and open. Looking through old images makes me so nostalgic — but also so proud of how far we’ve come. She’s back! This week my business partner/BFF returned from maternity leave. It’s been an interesting experience of forcing myself to make decisions without her in the chair next to me, or having that mental and emotional support throughout the day. In some ways it helped me become stronger and build my own individual confidence. But overall showed me that just how much I truly love working with her and how much I missed her while she was away. I feel so lucky to have her as my partner on this mission together and am SO happy she’s back. Ready to keep building together! ✨💗✨

I remember @ariannahuff had a great quote once regarding her daily meditation practice, she said: "I meditate every single day, except when I'm really busy -- then I meditate twice a day!" . That's how I feel about eating healthy. I remember my pre-Sakara days thinking if I was busy I would just skip a meal and I could "save my calories" for dinner and drinks. Now I understand that food is not about calories -- it's information. And when I'm busy, that is the time that my body needs full nourishment the most! . It is said that >70% of our immune system is in our gut. Our microbiome - specifically the microbes living in your gut - play a crucial role in this. When we are stressed, running at full speed, not sleeping enough or eating foods that take down our immunity (e.g. alcohol, sugar, dairy, bread), is the time we need to give our good bacteria what they need to thrive! . You may not love the leafy greens that come with your Sakara meals, but your microbes do. And your body (and immune system) will thank us when you're done eating them! This is the food they need to have the strength to keep you healthy and in balance when you're at your busiest. . Someone asked me how I stay motivated to eat my leafy greens on days like today -- for me I think back to the not-so-distant days that I felt terrible -- with cystic acne on my face, fem ecology problems, and anxiety pulsing through my body-- and then suck it up and eat them. From out of the darkness and into the light. . I like this time of year because it is a time for self reflection. Looking back at the year, what do I want to change? Where could I have been better? Done more -- or maybe less? . Not to make ourselves feel bad or guilty or shame, but to have the opportunity to grow/change/evolve-- and to start fresh. . It's hard to make changes if we first don't decide what we want to change. How do we grow if we don't acknowledge that there's room for growth? If we hide the things that we don't like about ourselves in the darkness we will never fully come into our light - to shine our brightest. And let that light shine for others. . Being on this Plant Based Challenge right now has helped me to not just think about what I'm putting into my body and reflect on my habits, but also on the type of person I want to be. . There are a lot of things I would have done differently if I could go back. But I can't. So I can only take those lessons forward with me into life. Today, I'm taking 5 minutes (maybe 10 if I can find it!) and am writing down what I want to change. Who do I want to be? And what needs to happen to get there. . "Eating more plants was the only thing that cured my lifelong battle with cystic acne. I realized it's not about what I cut out of my diet, but about what I put in. I finally feel comfortable in my own skin." . I am so excited for this Challenge. I am not a vegan, I focus my diet on eating 'mostly' plants and then listen to my body for everything else. I've discovered that that ratio of plants to everything else is extremely important. Growing up my dad used to fly his own plane. I remember the stories of adventures that he and my mom took before I was born. Like time they had to do an emergency landing on a highway in the middle of a snowstorm. I never got to do the full @kleinfeldbridal experience and "say yes to the dress" -- and I'm kind of feeling like I missed out! -- might have to go try on some dresses just for fun, who's with me?! 🙋 . Great panel last night at @kleinfeldbridal led by @theknot Editor In Chief @kristenmax with @drdennisgross talking skin @amandakloots talking fitness @shay_yarbrough talking THE dress and me -- talking nutrition, of course. . A big piece of advice rang clear through all of the panelists: . "It's not about dieting or working out or prepping for one "big day," it's about using that moment as motivation to build your strongest, healthiest body and the right habits that will last you a lifetime."

A peek into the secret garden clean beauty brunch 🌸 On Sunday we gathered to eat a beautiful meal, drink rosé and talk about beauty from the inside out and the outside in. To discuss the microbiome (your gut flora) and how it is the control center for not just your health or your waistline, but also your skin clarity-- and the secret to getting the glow! . Before starting Sakara I tried everything to clear my skin -- even laser peels that required 10 days of downtime hiding from the sun while looking like a red peely monster. I put myself through torture trying to fix it from the outside -- when the answer was actually within. . Through the process (and years of in depth research with @danielleduboise) I discovered that it's not about restriction or eliminating the things you love in life, it's about finding your personal balance point. That place where your body is in harmony. And then learning what takes it out of harmony and how to get back in. That it's a ratio of how much good you need to put into your body to how much bad your body can handle. And to remember that the clearest, healthiest, most radiant skin comes from a healthy balanced body. . That goes for skincare on the outside too-- I try to reduce the amount of toxins I put in and on my body, but know I'm never going to be perfect. And that's okay. But we are so lucky to be part of this time when so many amazing natural (and functional!) beauty brands are arising.
