It is with great sadness that we report the death of Frank Ackerman, one of the expert witnesses on behalf of the 21 youth plaintiffs in Juliana v. United States. The Our Children’s Trust team and the youth plaintiffs in Juliana will always remember the selfless work that Frank did to assist their effort to end the climate crisis. #Repost @ahealthyblueprint 💙 ・・・ I've followed this young activist on mainstream and social media for a while, and most recently have seen him popping up in my feed again for the #youthvgov lawsuit garnering international attention. @xiuhtezcatl is an indigenous climate activist who has been at the forefront of #ClimateAction and environmental conservation. He's also a hip-hop artist and youth director at @earthguardians 🌳 I attended the @gucci x @equalitynoworg 3rd annual panel where I heard Xiuhtezcatl and five other youth activists share their stories of inspiration and how they are effecting change on the issues they are passionate about. Xiuhtezcatl and 20 other youth are suing the US government for violating our constitutional rights to life, liberty, and property, including their failure to protect public trust resources. I was fortunate enough to hear him and the other youth speak at a town hall back in the spring, and now meet Xiuhtezcatl in person 🤩 To quote a wise young man on the urgency of tackling #climatechange: "what’s at stake right now is the existence of my generation." #climateemergency

On July 18, Coloradans, including our friends at @foe_us and Juliana v. US plaintiff Nick, delivered a letter to Senator Bennet’s offices in Denver and Grand Junction, asking him to revoke his support for the Jordan Cove export terminal. The project would ship natural gas fracked in Colorado from Oregon to Asia. It would be a climate disaster that hurts communities in Colorado and Oregon, but Bennet has supported the project for years. It’s time for our representatives to get serious about keeping fossil fuels in the ground. #youthvgov #keepitintheground

#Repost from Juliana v. US Vic 😎 ~~~~~~~~~~~ “It is our duty to fight for our freedom. It is our duty to win. We must love and support one another. We have nothing to lose but our chains.” This work isn’t easy and it isn’t always fun but every bit of energy spent, every tear shed, is worth knowing that I’ve reclaimed a little bit of what I’m owed. Peace of mind. My peers and I don’t see those in power doing much to quell our fears for the future. So we do it ourselves, we take care of each other in the streets, on the stages, during all the actions, protests, and organizing meetings. We take care of each other so that we can take care of our world, because the people with the power haven’t even scratched the surface of trying. We’ll do everything we can, because when you see the people who are supposed to support you taking away your future you realize that “we have nothing to lose but our chains.” 📸: @robin.loznak #youthvgov #climatechange #climatejustice #fridaysforfuture #youthactivism

#Repost @nrdc_org ・・・ Meet Kiran, Vic, Sahara, and Levi (clockwise from top left), four young climate activists fighting for a livable future with @youthvgov. With 17 other youth plaintiffs in the Juliana v. United States case, they’re arguing that the federal government is violating their constitutional right to life, liberty, and property by taking actions that have knowingly contributed to the climate crisis for more than five decades. But their work as climate activists goes beyond the courtroom. Kiran, 22, is both a musician and member of a collective that organizes concerts to spread awareness of environmental and social justice issues. The singer Patti Smith is one of his biggest inspirations, “because she didn't compromise in her goal of making art.” @connectwithlevi, 11, helps with beach cleanups, eats vegan, and picks up trash on walks with his family. “I fight for what I stand for and don't give up,” he says. “I've also learned to give speeches and talk to adults about something I understand better than they do!” The climate crisis makes 14-year-old Sahara feels sad and helpless at times, but she draws inspiration from fellow teen activists like @gretathunberg. When Sahara is older—a future she’s busy fighting for now—she hopes to work with nature: “I would also love to have my own garden and work at a place that creates and cares for others’ gardens.” And 20-year-old @vicbarrett_ is tired of young people being treated as photo ops instead of constituents: “I needed to take the chance to put the facts in front of the government.” Learn more about these young activists’ case and the upcoming hearing on June 4 by visiting the link in our bio. #climatechange #youthactivism #environmentalism #climateaction

The campaign to raise its profile – dubbed #IAmJuliana or #AllEyesOnJuliana – is the brainchild of Our Children’s Trust, the organization behind the lawsuit, and Future Coalition, the not-for-profit network forged to empower youth after the Parkland shooting. What’s unique about the campaign is what it signals: the infrastructure behind the youth climate movement is growing, decentralizing, and gaining momentum, all while activists set sights on the 2020 election. While Saturday’s events are designed to raise the profile of the Juliana case, they double as training exercises. Offering speaking and organizing opportunities to young leaders, the aim is to build skills through press conferences, local actions and, yes, vegetarian picnics. #Repost @earthfocus ・・・ Imagine. Barcelona, 2100. 🤯 Our global sea levels have risen 16-21cm since 1900 but new studies reveal an accelerating rise. This serious acceleration is due to global warming that drives: the melting of ice sheets and thermal expansion (when water warms it increases in size). Whilst projecting future sea level rise is challenging, as our climate system is so complex, climate scientists expect the rate to further accelerate during the 21st Century. Just a few painful impacts of such a rise include coastal storm-surge flooding, coastal erosion and changes in water quality. This could devastate the lives of the millions of people who live in low-lying areas around the world. This is a terrible injustice because we don’t all contribute to this problem equally and often those who have contributed the least will suffer the most. This is unfair and the most pressing task is to address this injustice. We must reduce future greenhouse emissions as well as address consequences of carbon already emitted. Individual action is crucial: the decisions we make everyday have real consequences for our planet. We can all make small changes, to address how unevenly we contribute to the problem, that make big differences. Some of the best things you can do are reduce the amount of meat and dairy you eat, reduce the number of flights you take and reduce the amount of power you use. Every day makes a difference, every meal makes a difference. Photo by @ianharper & edit @steffeneisenacher

#Repost @alex_macnicoll ・・・ Dear people of the Instant Gram📱 JUNE 4th is an important day in the fight for climate action. Since 2015, 21 young people from across the country have been suing the federal government for violating their constitutional rights to life, liberty, and property by knowingly contributing to climate change for over five decades. The youth plaintiffs have been successful at winning every step of the way, despite efforts by both the U.S. government and the fossil fuel industry to shut it down. Like Brown v. Board of Education did for civil rights, Juliana v. United States has the potential to become the landmark climate change case of our country’s history. On June 4th, the 21 Juliana plaintiffs will present their argument to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in Portland, Oregon about why this case should continue to trial. This hearing represents a crucial point in the case. It will determine two things: whether the case should continue to trial as the youth request and whether the federal government should halt new fossil fuel extraction projects while the court decides the case. Together, we have the opportunity to make climate history. We have until June 4th to bring attention to the case and make it clear to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals that we will not be quiet as our constitutional right to a stable climate and a livable future is being violated. Join @youthvgov + @futurecoalition in saying #AllEyesOnJuliana! Visit iamjuliana.org to learn more about Juliana and how to get involved.
